Justice Ameratunge withdraws from Golden Key case

Justice Nimal Gamini Ameratunge, a member of the three Judge Bench of the Supreme Court hearing the petitions in connection with the Rs 26 billion Golden Key Credit Card scam yesterday declined to hear the case.

The Golden Key Credit Card Company, a member of the Ceylinco Group headed by Lalith Kotelawala with a total asset base of Rs.13 billion, collapsed following a financial crisis leaving hundreds of depositors in the lurch and sparking protest and demonstrations by two depositor groups both headed by women. Some lost their life time earnings. The depositors filed petitions in the Supreme Court seeking redress.
