Good leaders practice self-restraint - President
Rasika Somarathna in Matara
Self-control enables good leaders to stay calm and clear-headed, and
act strategically instead of just reacting, President Mahinda Rajapaksa
said.
He said exercising self-control involves managing one's emotions and
impulses to control inappropriate reactions and channel energy in a
positive manner.
He was addressing the students of Sujatha College, Matara after
opening two new three storey buildings at the school premises on Sunday.
The induction of prefects and student leaders for 2013 too was held in
his presence.
He said most believe leaders are the ones who control others and told
children that good leaders first should know how to exercise
self-control.
He said the best example on self-control was the conduct and
teachings of Buddha. He said a leader should also abstain from lethargy,
procrastination, jealousy and should not fear challenges. The
government's ability to prevail over procrastination, lethargy and
obstacles had helped develop the country and win the war against terror,
President Rajapaksa said. He pointed out that the country had to pay a
heavy price due to delays, lethargy and negative mindset of some
previous regimes on development and war against terrorism.
He pointed out that the development of international airports,
Hambantota harbour, power stations at Ihala Kotmale and Norochcholai,
achieving self sufficiency in rice, filling teacher vacancies etc had
been delayed due to such negative mindsets.
He added that due to the positive attitude of the present government,
such development work in peace and unity had become a reality today. The
President advised students to get rid of procrastination, lethargy and
negative attitudes if they want to be successful.
"Never put off what you have to do today, for another day. Never get
deterred by obstacles or hurdles," he told the children.
Speaking on the government's efforts to develop education, he said
measures are taken to ensure equity in distribution of facilities and
resources to all corners of the country.
He pointed out that no other government in history has given such
emphasis to develop education than the incumbent one.
He told students that they should strive to become intellectuals who
could contribute to the country's progress if government's efforts to
eradicate poverty after ridding the country of terrorism are to be
successful.
Teachers and parents of the school participated in the event.
Minister Bandula Gunawardene and the school principal also spoke.
