Feast of St Anthony’s Kachchathivu on February 23:

Over 10,000 Indian devotees expected

Arrangements are in place to hold the annual feast of St Anthony’s Church in Kachchativu Island on a grand scale. Over 5,000 devotees from India participated in the festival last year while nearly 10,000 Indian devotees are expected this year. The Navy is to facilitate the conduct of the annual feast of St Anthony’s Church under the direction of the Defence and Urban Development Ministry and the supervision of Navy Commander Vice Admiral Jayanath Colombage.

The feast will be held from February 23 to 25. Measures have been taken to provide facilities for local devotees and those arriving from India. The notable feature is the participation of Sri Lankan as well as South Indian devotees.

Northern Province Governor G A Chandrasiri said measures have been taken to provide facilities for them with the assistance of the Navy.

The Jaffna District Secretariat decided to provide a special boat service to facilitate the Lankan devotees.

The Navy provided infrastructure facilities including development of all by-roads and installations, sanitary and drinking water facilities in the Kachchativu Island located in Sri Lanka’s Northern waters on the instruction of Northern Naval Area Commander Rear Admiral Shirantha Udawatte. Jetties have been made ready for people to secure their boats conveniently. Life saving teams and special medical units of the Sri Lankan Navy are to be deployed to ensure the safety of devotees attending the festival.

The annual feast of Kachchativu Church is dedicated to St Anthony, the patron-saint of seafarers.

The church was built in the early 20th century by a fisherman. It has been repaired and renovated by the Navy for the occasion.
