Attacked by wasps

Eight persons attacked by wasps while working on a tea estate at
Deegala, Lenama were admitted to the Akuressa District Hospital last
Monday. One of the victims who was in a critical condition, was
transferred to the Matara General Hospital while the other victims were
under going treatment.
Electricity for villages

The village of Chempionpattu in Vadamaradchy has received electricity
after 65 years of independence said Pasupathy Seevaratnam, President
Palmyrah Development Board who switched on power supplying electricity
to the Chempianpattu area.
Jaffna District Electrical Engineer Gnana Ganeshan, Electrical Supdt
Rajeswaran, Rev. Fr. M. Yogaratnam and Parish Priest Thalaiyaddy
participated at the inauguration ceremony.
Kilinochchi market opens

The second stage of the Kilinochchi Central market was opened in
February 11. This market was opened by President Mahinda Rajapaksa on
August 25 last year. It was built at a cost of Rs. 25 m. allocated by
the Economic Development Ministry. The Chairman Karchchi Pradeshiya
Sabha V. Kugarajah opened the second stage of the market.
Shortage of teachers

There is a shortage of teachers in the primary section of the Sri
Pada Navodya Vidyalaya, in Hatton in the Hatton Educational zone in the
Nuwara Eliya District. Although the primary section of the school needs
15 teachers at present it has only nine primary teachers.
The dearth of primary teachers in the primary section has badly
affected students’ educational activities, most parents complain.
Parents of the primary section request educational authorities concerned
to take immediate steps to appoint the necessary cadre of teacher.
Nearly 200 dengue cases in 2013

About 200 dengue cases have been reported in the Provincial
Divisional Secretary areas of Wayamba from January 1 to February 12,
2013. Public Health Inspectors of the Kurunegala Municipal Council filed
12 cases against householders and four hoteliers for their failure to
eradicate mosquito breeding places in and around their homes and hotels.
The Kurunegala MC Commissioner G.K.S. Chandralatha told the media
that she had received several complaints from the public that certain
PHIs in conjunction with hoteliers are engaged in misdeeds. She stressed
that all such cases will be reported to the higher authorities and actin
will be taken against all wrong doers.
Lent pilgrimage season begins

The Lent pilgrimage season of the Hiniduma Calvary shrine
ceremonially commenced on February 13 with the Ash Wednesday service.
The season will continue until April 7 with the Thanksgiving Mass. All
facilities such as drinking water, electricity, tea rooms, food shops,
pilgrims rests with sanitary facilities, and provision shops are
available at the St. Annes’s Church premises, the administrator of the
Calvary shrine Fr. Ranath Indika Anthony told the Daily News.
He further said that the arrival of the pilgrims before dusk will
facilitate the shrine authorities to provide them with accomodation.
Asteroid to pass earth tomorrow
A chunk of rock in space known as an asteroid in astronomical terms
will pass the Earth within the orbits of geosynchronous satellites ring
about 35,800 kms above the equator tomorrow at 00.56 hours Sri Lankan
time, the Arthur C Clarke Institute of Modern Technologies said in a
release yesterday.
The asteroid named 2012 DA 14 was discovered by the LaSagra
Observatory in Southern Spain. It has an estimated diameter of 45kms It
will pass Earth at a speed of nearly eight kms.
Man dies in wasp attack
One of the two men, stung by wasps while working in a land succumbed
to his injuries at Telippalei hospital on Wednesday.
The other is being treated in the same hospital. Nirmaththu Karthu,
64, of Wallipuram died in the incident.
Invasive plants cleared in Bundala

An extent of 454 hectares of invasive plants known as Kalapu Andara
is being cleared at the Bundala National Park under the guidance of the
Wildlife Department, said Park Warden Karunasena Vitharana.
The wetlands of the park is an internationally reputed resting place
for migratory birds.
Anniversary
The College of Otorhinolaryngologists will hold its 10th anniversary
on February 16 at 6.00 pm at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute (SLFI),
Colombo7.
The theme of the event will be 'the journey towards excellence, a
decade and beyond'.
Prof. J.B. Dissanayake will be the Chief Guest. Health Ministry
secretary Dr. Nihal Jayatilleke will be the guest of honour.
Two prominent British ENT surgeons, Dr.Robin Youngs and Dr.robert
Nills will take part in the workshop and lecture sessions.
AGM today
The Sri Lanka Auditor Service Association will hold its 56th Annual
General Meeting at the New Town Hall building, Nelum Pokuna Mawatha,
Colombo 7 today at 10 am. Ministers DEW Gunasekera and Wimal Weerawansa
will be the Chief Guests.
