Power pirate fined heavily
A power pirate of Thunnalai in Point Pedro was fined Rs. 300,000 by
the Point Pedro Magistrate Sri Nithi Nandasegaran in a case in which he
was accused of tapping electricity illegally.
The Electricity Board Flying Squad conducted the raid. He pleaded
guilty to the charge of this sum Rs. 200,000 was to be paid to the
Electricity Board and Rs. 100,000 to the government coffers as fine.
Japanese aid mine clearing
The Japanese government has given Rs. 107 M. to the Hale Trust for
un-earthing of land mines in the Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaithivu and
Trincomalee Districts. About 1,000 women are engaged in clearing land
mines. So far 2,400 land mines have been cleared on 660 hectares of
land.
Girl drowns
A 17 year old girl was drowned in Thadchanankulam while bathing with
her friends. Her body has been recovered and sent to Vavuniya hospital
for inquest and inquiries.
Monetary assistance for students
With financial assistance of people in foreign countries poor
students in the Jaffna District have been given assistance to pursue
their studies.
A sum of Rs 12 lakhs and 89 thousand rupees had been remitted from
France and England to implement the Sarvodaya educational programme in
the Jaffna District. The Punguduthivu Educational union in France
remitted Rs. Five lakhs and ten thousand rupees for the payment of
salaries to pre-school teachers. The one lakh and ninety eight thousand
rupees remitted by London expatriates had been used to coach students
for examinations. The Punguduthivu Old Boys’ Association had spent Rs.
60,000 for educational expenses of nine students.
Red onions to be cultivated
Onions will be cultivated in 2,000 acres of land in the Jaffna
District during the next season.
Cultivators have shown interest in the cultivating onions as the
market price is soaring.
There is a scarcity of red onions in Jaffna and cultivators are
preparing their lands for cultivation of red onions. |
