Programme to return vehicles to rightful owners

A programme to return all vehicles found abandoned in the North after the war to their rightful owners, have been launched by the government. These include vehicles forcibly acquired by LTTE terrorists and those abandoned by the owners during the war time due to various reasons, said Commissioner General of Motor Traffic, S M Harischandra. He said that out of the vehicles collected from the Kilinochchi District, 5,000 had been checked according to chassis numbers. The data relating to these vehicles collected by the department for registration, have now been supplied to the relevant District Secretariats for necessary action.

He said his department would dispatch a team of 20 officials next week to Kilinochchi, to check another 2,500 collected vehicles. Since all data relating to the abandoned vehicles have been supplied to the relevant District Secretariats, people in the Northern Province would be given the opportunity to reclaim their vehicles after submitting the relevant documents to the respective District Secretariats (Kachcheris)
