Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena has made a decision to offer
training to minor staffers attached to state hospitals to obtain a
better service from them. There are over 16,000 employees in the minor
staff of the state health sector, a Health Ministry spokesman said.
According to the spokesman, minor staff members in the state health
sector do not carry out duties such as cleaning toilets, wash rooms as
such duties are carried out by private sector cleaning staffs hired by
hospitals.
Minor staffers carry out other duties such as assisting other health
staff, he said.
Minor staffers do not have any knowledge or training on handling
patients.
They assist other health staffers such as doctors, nurses to carry
out their duties. They also assist patients and carry them into
ambulances and take them out. These tasks demand skilled labour to
ensure the safety of patients, he said.
State hospital Directors will be given powers to train their minor
staffers. They will be provided in service training on relevant duties,
he said.
