Galle Mayor dismissed

Galle Mayor Methsiri De Silva has been dismissed from both the mayoral post and the council membership with immediate effect as he has been proved guilty of charges of maladministration and misappropriation of Council's funds during his previous tenure from 2009 to 2011 as the Galle Mayor.

This was announced by a special gazette issued yesterday by Southern Provincial Chief Minister Shan Wijayalal De Silva in his capacity as the Provincial Minister of Local Government.

As the above charges were leveled against the mayor he was suspended from the post pending an inquiry held by retired justice M. A. De Silva.

However, Methsiri despite the charges leveled against him contested the consequent Galle Municipal elections in 2011and re-elected as Galle Mayor securing the highest number of preferential votes of 10,700.

He served as the Galle Mayor until he was dismissed yesterday.
