Mirissa baby turtles released to sea
Ridma DISSANAYAKE
The first set of green baby turtles, specially cared for at the
turtle conservation site of the Sri Lanka Coast Guard Regional
Headquarters, Mirissa for three months, were released to the sea on
Saturday.
The baby turtles needed special treatment and care since they were
exposed to harsh conditions when leaving their nesting place. It was an
exciting experience for tourists who witnessed the release.
The Coast Guard Turtle Conservation Project (CGTCP) was launched in
September 2012 to preserve and raise the awareness of sea turtle
conservation in Sri Lanka.
The Coast Guard action plan includes providing information related to
turtle behaviour (nesting, hatchlings, feeding and mating) to those
conducting research on the endangered species.
The CGTCP is located at Mirissa beach adjoining the Rohana Coast
Guard Station which is considered a most suitable location for turtle
nesting. Nearly 800 eggs are buried at the site of the hatchery.
