The Debater reaches finals
Over 20 schools participated in ‘The Debater’, an All Island
Televised English Language debating championship organized by MTV
Sports. At the conclusion of three rounds of intense debate two schools
have survived to face the Grand Finale.
Ananda College, Colombo and Lyceum International School, Nugegoda
will take on the topic of whether or not a global body should or should
not take over internet governance.
The finals will be aired LIVE on MTV SPORTS from 6 pm onwards on
January 24.
The debaters will be on the biggest stage they have faced yet as the
finals will take place before a live audience of 1000 and a bench
consisting of 7 Judges. The bench will consist of luminaries from the
legal and academic world.
The Debater challenges each student with a format adapted to
television audiences. Thus the show does not just ensure a learned
debate but also entertaining arena in which they can push the boundaries
of formal debating. In addition to individual speeches the debaters must
face a firing squad of questions from the opposing team.
This new style of debating has proven to be extremely popular among
school students and has assisted in attracting more and more students to
take up debating as an extra-curricular activity.
The Debater on MTV SPORTS is the only platform in which we have seen
students from Government, Private and International schools coming
together on one stage, The competition also attracted students from
every ethnic background and almost all major districts of the country,
with strong representation from Kandy, Colombo, Jaffna and Matara. The
grand finale is the culmination of nine months of hard work of the
students of Ananda and Lyceum.
It is the largest gathering in celebration of the spoken word of the
student community.
It is a commemoration of the talent and promise of the future stake
holders of Sri Lanka.
