Token strike called off

Employees of Sri Lanka Railways has decided to temporary call off a 56-hour token strike that was scheduled to commence from midnight tomorrow.

Convener of the Joint Trade Union Alliance of Sri Lanka Railways, Janaka Fernando said the decision to call off the strike was taken after a meeting was scheduled to be held on January 23 with the Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga.


Laying of new oil pipeline commences

The Petroleum Industries Ministry is to commence the work of laying a new oil pipeline from the Colombo Port to Kolonnawa Petroleum Storage Terminal shortly, a release issued by the ministry said.It stated the preliminary measures has been taken to commence this project.

Cabinet approval was granted last week to accelerate this projectfollowing a Cabinet paper submitted by the Ministry.

The existing oil pipeline is over 40 years old. The project is to be carried out according to the procurement procedure of the Standing Cabinet Appointed Review Committee (SCARC). The diameter of a new oil pipe is about 18 inches.


First Naval and Maritime Museum opens next month

The first Naval and Maritime Museum in Sri Lanka will be opened next month, Archaeological Department said.

This Naval and Maritime Museum has been established with the assistance of the Netherlands government, they added. The museum will be opened on February 4, to coincide with the Independence Day celebrations.

The Sri Lanka’s first Naval and Maritime Museum has been established in Trincomalee near Fort Fredericks. The construction of this building have been done by the Sri Lanka Navy.

The museum is located in front of Back Bay where the Portuguese first landed in Trincomalee in the sixteenth century.

Sri Lanka has a Maritime Archaeology Museum in the Old Dutch Warehouse in Galle Fort.


'O' positive kidney needed

Watery grave in Hungama for Maharagama resident

A resident of Maharagama drowned in the Hungama sea on Saturday, Police said.

The deceased was identified as Jagath Rohana, 49.The body was sent to the Hambantota District Hospital for the post-mortem.

Investigations are continuing.
