The Urban Development Authority (UDA) will develop the building which
housed the St John’s Fish Market in Colombo as a gold market, project
manager Champika de Silva said. It will be named the Gold Centre.
The UDA plans to setup jewellery shops and jewellery exhibition
centres in the premises of the former St John’s Fish Market, he said.
UDA Director General Nihal Fernando said the St John’s Fish Market,
which was in Colombo, was relocated at Peliyagoda a few years back.
Around 70 Army personnel are carrying out the construction of the new
jewellery shops, he said.
Fernando said the work is being carried out on the instruction of
Defence and Urban Development Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.
The first and second stories of the building are to be developed as
the Gold Centre. Work under the first stage is to be completed by June
2013. The complex will have over 100 jewellery shops, he said. |
