Central Environmental Authority partners EDEX Expo 2013

The environmental Authority (CEA) was established in 1981 under the provision of the National Environmental Act.

The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (ME&NR) which was established in 2001 has the overall responsibility in the affairs of the CEA; with the objective of integrating environmental considerations in the development process of the country.

The CEA has been given wider regulatory powers under the National Environment Act.

The vision of the CEA is to create a clean and green environment through service excellence and the CEA is in the forefront of spearheading Green initiatives at national level.

Its mission is to steer the nation towards protecting and managing the quality of the environment by promoting public participation, enforcement, advanced technological interventions and environmental education.

The CEA has a host of special environmentally focused programmes at a national level aimed at creating a green Sri Lanka and establishing best practices.

The Pilasaru programme, the national post consumer plastic waste management programme, the establishment of the Environmental resources information system in six selected provinces, a household waste reduction and minimisationprogramme in Gampaha, the monitoring of the quality of water in the river basins of the country and developing a databasefor environment pollution activities, are a few key projects in addition to its regulatory programmes.

The focus on creating an environmentally friendly future generation has also resulted in a School Environmental Pioneer programme which has been established in more than 6000 schools country wide in order to create awareness of the paramount important of preserving the environment for future generations.

This initiative makes the school children key stake-holders in the nation's sustainable Green efforts.

The tenth EDEX expo will be held on January 18, 19 and 20 at the BMICH Colombo and on January 25-26 at the Kandy City Centre, respectively.
