The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) will take legal action against
the trader who imported 800,000 kilos of unrefined sugar mixed with
sand, seized at a warehouse in Sedawatte on January 9.
CAA Special Investigation Unit OIC Pradeep Kaluaraarachchi said the
errant businessman will be produced before the Maligakanda magistrate.
The adulterated sugar imported from Brazil was valued at Rs 80
million.
The stock is believed to be the balance of a stock of sugar seized by
the CAA on December 31. The consignment of sugar had been imported from
Brazil to the same trade number. The samples of the refined sugar were
sent to the Government Analyst's Department. The report revealed the
sugar was mixed with sand. |
