The Bandarawela Municipal Council was
adjudged the Best Municipal Council in the field of solid
waste management at the Swarna Purawara awards ceremony and
Local Government forum organized by the Provincial Councils
and Local Government Ministry at Temple Trees yesterday.
This awards ceremony is held annually with the objective of
promoting efficacy and management of local government
institutions. Here, the President presents the award to the
Bandarawela MC. Ministers Nimal Siripala De Silva, Basil
Rajapaksa, Jagath Pushpakumara, C.B. Ratnayake, S.B.
Navinna, P Dayarathna , Chief Minister and Governors were

A branch of Carlton preschools was
opened at Dehiwala, Mount Lavinia under the patronage of
First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa yesterday. Carlton preschools
have opened up a news era in preschool education on the
advice of the Executive Director and Principal of Carlton
Preschool First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa. With a view to
create a skilled and knowledgeable younger generation the
first Carlton preschool was opened at Tangalle based on
Carlton residencies in 1982 under the guidance of the First
Lady. The Carton preschools operate eight preschools
countrywide now. Preschool education at Carlton preschools
has been especially designed in line with the international
preschool education criteria. Accordingly, every student
receives a complete education from the Carlton preschools.
Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa is also a past student of
the Carlton preschool. At the initial stage, it has been
scheduled to enrol 150 children for the Dehiwala preschool.
The preschool comes with all modern facilities and
equipment, including a play park, music unit and information

A- 150 - old Tamarind tree fell on
the Batticaloa- Kalmunai highway at Onthachchimadam on
Monday evening. Kaluwanchikudy Police OIC P R Manavadu along
with Police and Army personnel took steps to remove the
tree. The road was free for traffic after three hours.

A maize harvesting festival was held
at Kayanmadu in the Secretarial Division of Chenkalady on
Sunday. It was organised by the Department of Agriculture,
Batticaloa district. Deputy Director of Agriculture,
Batticaloa district, R Harikaran along with Eravur
Divisional Secretary U Uthayasirithar participated. Nearly
2,000 acres were planted with maize in the Batticaloa
district and most have been affected by the heavy rains.
