No legal obligation to go before court - Ranil
Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday said certain English
Language newspapers harbour an agenda against Parliament.
He made this observation in Parliament yesterday raising a privilege
matter. He said a certain overseas English language newspaper which has
a correspondent in Sri Lanka and another local newspaper on January 2
and 3 carried incorrect news items about him. He said he never barred
anybody going before courts. He asked how could he bar anybody going
before court when there is no legal obligation to do so. He also said
that the Speaker has ruled, that the PSC members had no obligation to go
before court. He also said there is an issue with regard to procedure in
moving the impeachment motion.
Wickremesinghe added that they have to adhere to the judgement of
Justice Amarathunga on this occasion.
He also requested Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa to intervene on the issue
that has arisen between Legislature and Judiciary tomorrow and the day
after tomorrow. Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa said that the issue will be
directed to the Privileges Committee.
