CJ impeachment :
Former Speaker’s ruling binding on Parliament - DM
Nadira GUNATILLEKE
A former Speaker, late Anura Bandaranaike had given a historic
judgement stating that it is the Parliament which is supreme and it does
not need to obey the Supreme Court, Attorney-at-law and Deputy Health
Minister Lalith Dissanayake said.
Deputy Minister Dissanayake said nobody can go beyond that judgement
that says Parliament makes laws and it is supreme. Nobody talks about
the charges leveled against the Chief Justice and everybody speaks about
the Constitution, procedure and loopholes of the method implemented.
Nobody talks about the wrongdoings.
When you go through the third and fourth articles in the 1978
Constitution it is clear that the law treats all equally. Under article
107 of the Constitution the Parliament Select Committee is appointed to
investigate the issue Parliament is supreme and nothing or nobody can
challenge this reality, the Deputy Minister said.
“Parliament will give verdict on January 10 or 11. I am one of the
members of the jury that will deliver the verdict on CJ”, the Deputy
Minister added.
He expressed these views after opening several development projects
completed at Avissawella Base Hospital.
Civil Aviation Deputy Minister Geethanjana Gunawardena, Western
Provincial Council Health Minister Jagath Angage and many others were
present. |
