He stole 16 mobile phones

A man who stole 16 upmarket cellular phones and I pods during the festive season, was taken into custody by Kollupitiya Police. The Police appealed to those who lost their cellular phones to visit the police station and identify their phones. The suspect aged 35 produced before Fort Magistrate Kanishka Wijeratne was remanded until January 10.

The suspect pleaded guilty to the thefts. He was arrested following a complaint lodged by a manager of shop. The suspect’s modus operandi was to engage in conversation with the owner and steal the phone when it was kept on a table and walk away. The total value of the stolen objects are still being assessed.

Under interrogation, the suspect confessed to several similar thefts in Kohuwala and Nugegoda. Investigations are continuing.
