The National Green Reporting System initiated last year has become a
remarkable step towards "the greening the industries in Sri Lanka", said
Environment Ministry Secretary B M U D Basnayake.
He said under this mission, strategies and actions have been
developed to minimise environmental degradation by promoting sustainable
and cleaner production in industries.
Participating in the Annual Green Reporting Ceremony 2012 at Waters
Edge in Battaramulla recently, he observed the operations of industries
could lead to environment damage to its surroundings mainly through the
discharge of effluents and emissions.
"A Green Report provides an excellent approach for an organisation to
maintain sustainable production process while controlling emissions. It
is an effective communication tool that can be used for sharing
information on the sustainability performances on social, economic,
environmental and governance system of an organisation," he said.
The award for the Best Green Reporter in 2011 was won by Textured
Jersey Lanka PLC, while Ocean Lanka (Pvt) Ltd and Heritance Kandalama
won appreciation certificates during this event.
The objective of National Green Report ceremony was to recognise and
reward on their sustainable reports on social, economic and environment,
submitted for July 1 to December 31, 2011 by the manufacturing and
service sectors. |
