Iranamadu air strip rehabilitation underway
The Iranamadu Air Force runaway is being rehabilitated. So far, 1,400
metres of runaway has been rehabilitated.
This runaway will be extended to 1,500 metres. It will be
rehabilitated for the use of heavy weight C 130 planes. On completion of
rehabilitation work, it will be opened by president Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Viral infection spreading
A virus infection is spreading in Jaffna and Kilinochchi and one has
died at Jaffna hospital. Daily, about ten persons are admitted to
Kilinochchi hospital. The OPD is besieged with patients with fever.
Mullaithivu ideal for cadju
The Mullaithivu district is ideal for the cultivation of cadju. For
the last 30 years, cadju cultivation had not been undertaken. Now,
assistance will be given for the cultivation of cadju in Mullaithivu.
Cadju cultivation is an income generating cultivation where a
cultivator can earn Rs 150,000 by cultivating an acre of land Small
Export Development Minister Reginald Cooray said. The Minister was
speaking at the inauguration of a cadju plantation at the Mullaithivu
Secretariat.
He said the cadju cultivators should give up the old method of
cultivation and take up new methods. One hundred cadju cultivators were
given cadju saplings and fertilizer to undertake new method of
cultivate.
No power cuts from January
The Jaffna peninsula will get an additional 24 megawatt power from a
generator installed at Chunnakam power house. There will be no power
cuts in Jaffna after January next year Technical Officer of Chunnakam
Power House said.
He said the new generator has been brought by ship to Kanesanthurai
and has been instaled at Chunnakam. A trial test was conducted last
Thursday.
Woman drowns in tub
A woman who was washing her clothes in a tub was found drowned in the
tub. She was washing her clothes for more than an hour and was believed
to have fallen into the tub due to fatigue.
She is the mother of an 18-year-old girl. She was identified as
Satheeskumar Suganthini, 38, of Vadamaradchy Thunnalai Allayampathy.
Woman plotting to kill minister sentenced
Rajalingham Thamarivalli of Thinnavely, Jaffna has been sentenced to
20 years rigorous imprisonment by Kegalle High Court Judge Menaka
Wijesooriya in a case where she was found guilty of plotting to murder
Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella between 2007 and 2008.
She was arrested by the anti terrorism squad.
