More abandoned paddy fields come under the plough

Farmers in and around Eheliyagoda have taken steps to re-cultivate several medium sized paddy fields which had been left abandoned for some time.

Among these partially fallow paddy fields are the 50 acre Thibbotuwawa paddy field, Thalawitiya paddy field and Moragala paddy field that were already fully cultivated.

A field officer attached to Eheliyagoda Agrarian Services office told the Daily News that farmers are compelled to re-cultivate their fallow paddy fields mainly due to fertilizer subsidy and the other encouraging measures taken by the government under the Mahinda Chinthana concept.
