The Health Ministry will set up an eco - friendly hospital system in
Sri Lanka under the direction of President Mahinda Rajapaksa. The
Mirigama Base Hospital is to be developed as the first eco - friendly
hospital, a Health Ministry spokesman said.
According to the spokesman, Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena
decided to set up one eco - friendly hospital in each district. Patients
who suffer long term illnesses and in need of peace and tranquility will
be treated at these hospitals. Heart patients and patients with long
term respiratory diseases will also be treated at these hospitals.
“At the moment, an eco - friendly programme is being implemented in
all state hospitals, but, Sri Lanka is still to set up an eco - friendly
hospital. Eco - friendly hospitals are common in developed countries.
The Mirigama Base Hospital was selected as the first eco - friendly
hospital responding to a request made by Ven.Veveldeniye Medhalanka
Thera to President Mahinda Rajapaksa, he said.
The Mirigama Base Hospital is located in a 16 acre land but very few
patients visit this hospital for treatment due to specialist treatment
available in other state hospitals in the area.
The project will be completed within three years and it is funded by
the Health Ministry and the Western Provincial Council, he added.
