Two passengers planning to leave Sri
Lanka with foreign currency valued at Rs 270,000 and gold
valued at Rs 150,000 were taken into custody at the
Bandaranaike International Airport yesterday. The suspects
are residents of Aluthgama and Kalmunai. The gold weighing
209grams was hidden in one suspect’s person while the money
was concealed in the other suspect’s stocking. Picture by

Naval personnel attached to the
Eastern Naval Command rescued a fishing trawler stuck on
rocks close to Sweat Bay last week. The fishing
trawler Saman Eliya left
Cod Bay Fisheries Harbour for fishing. The incident occurred
while leaving the harbour. A Naval patrol craft sent a
rescue team to the location. The trawler and the five member
crew were towed to Sweat Bay beach safely for repairs.
Children whose drawings were selected
at the first round of the contest organised by UNES CO, were
feted at a ceremony at Royal College, Colombo, where the
drawings are exhibited. About 300 children received painting

Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital
completed 28 years yesterday. A medical centre was opened at
the Isurupaya Education Ministry premises by Health Minister
Maithripala Sirisena and Education Minister Bandula
Gunawardene to mark the occasion and to commence the
National Health Week. Here, Ministers unveil the plaque to
open the centre. Ministry Secretary Nihal Jayatilleke and
Hospital chairman Dr. Nimal Bandara were also present.
