Some sections of the Sri Lankan society and the international
community do not want to see Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim children living
in harmony in a united Sri Lanka, Construction, Engineering, Housing and
Common Amenities Minister Wimal Weerawansa said.
The minister who was the Chief Guest at the annual prize day ceremony
of Nugegoda Tamil Maha Vidyalaya, said he hardly received invitations
from Tamil medium schools for public functions in the past five six
years.
“This has changed now. I now receive a number of invitations for
functions from Tamil medium schools,” Weerawansa said.
The minister said it was he who opened the first housing scheme as a
village for Tamil and Muslim fishing communities in Mannar, after
assuming duties as the housing minister.
“People of all races are living peacefully now. The people must
forget bitter memories and move ahead as a single nation,” he said.
“Certain sections in Sri Lanka and around the world are not happy
about Sri Lanka's peaceful environment,” the minister said.
“A school is a place where the seeds of ethnic harmony or hatred is
sown. The main factor of deciding the future of a child depends on the
school. Arrangements will be made to develop this school situated in the
centre of Nugegoda town,” he said.
