Theologates ‘B’- Kandy district cager champions

Theologates ‘B’ team from the Ampitiya National Seminary on the way to priesthood had the luck of the saints when they overcame stiff opposition to beat the Kandy Cagers by the slender margins of 18-16 in the finals to become Kandy District Men's basketball champion in the tournament conducted by the Kandy District Basketball Associations and played at St. Anthony's Girls College Courts at Katugastota. At half time Kandy cagers led 10-8.

It was a ding dong battle with one teams taking over the lead only to be over taken by the other. It was anybody's game till ‘no side’ was flown.

The chief guest the chief Minister of Central Province and President of the Sri Lanka Basketball Federation Sarath Ekanayake speaking on the occasion said it was one of the finest matches he had ever witnessed and Theologates put up a stirring performance to clinch the finals. This shows that despite their religious duties, they would have practiced hard to compete and win a district championship.

They are the best in the district.

He said that this is not all the Ampitiya National Seminary fielded five of the 12 teams in this championship. This is an indication there is an abundance of talent in this religious institution and by fielding five teams in the same tournament these would have been a dilution of talent but still they won the championship which is creditable indeed.

In the semi-finals Kandy Cagers beat Old Azarians 19-14 and Theologates ‘B’ beat University of Peradeniya ‘A’ 27 – 16.

In the consolation finals Old Azarians beat University of Peradeniya A 15-9.

The results of semi of the league Matches played earlier were.

Theologates A lost Old Azarians 1921, University of Peradeniya ‘A beat Kandy YMCA 17-15.
