Thushan Jayasuriya
The Hambantota Sports Club (HSC) Blues qualified to the final of the
Carlton Cup Basketball 2012 when they beat the gallant Sri Lanka Air
Force Basketball Club by 56 points to 49 after a thrilling contest at
Henry Pedris Courts yesterday.
HSC Blues entered the match showing lot of strength and they were
leading narrowly in the first quarter. The Airmen attempted to come up
with a strong attack but did not able to overcome their opponents. The
strong man to man defence has been helpful for the lads from Hambantota
to pressurize their rival. The scores read 32 - 25 in favour of Blues at
halftime.
The lads from Hambantota continued in the same fashion in remaining
quarters of the game. In the final quarter both teams entered the game
with a steady start and were in a tense struggle to remain unbeaten. But
the strong Hambantota lads did not allow to snatch the lead from them
and maintained their controle throught the game. HSC displayed a superb
teamwork and made their way to the final by beating Airmen 56 - 49.
Vibhavi Alkegama top scored for the winners with 15 points while
Kanishka Vishvanath scored nine points. Ravi Dodangoda
(17 points) and Ranga Perera (eight points) were the main
contributors for the losers.
Coinsidently both last year's finalists will battle it out for the
supremacy this year too as HSC blues will meet defending champions
Colombo BC in the 'A' division final to be played on November 24 at the
Henry Padris courts.
