Law Week 2012, ‘Knowledge of Law for Public’
The “Law Week 2012” Committee has organized a series of seminars
under the auspices of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka in nine districts
through the District Secretaries and Grama Niladharis to educate the
public on the knowledge of the law.
This programme will be conducted in the following districts between 9
am and 12.00 noon from November 20 to 29 and from 9 am to 5 pm on
December 1 at the Courts premises at Hulftsdorp.
November 20 – Ratnapura District – District Secretariat Auditorium,
November 22 – Galle District – Hall de Galle, Galle, November 23 –
Anuradhapura-District-District Secretariat Training Unit Auditorium,
November 24 – Badulla District-District Secretariat Auditorium, November
24 – Gampaha District-District Secretariat Auditorium, November 26 –
Puttalam District-Divisional Secretariat Auditorium, November 29 –
Nuwara Eliya District-District Secretariat Auditorium, November 29 –
Trincomalee District-District Secretariat Auditorium.
This year to take the knowledge of law to the people a magazine under
the title of ‘knowledge of law for Divi Neguma’ consisting of articles
by leading lawyers on the laws affecting the day-to-day life of the
public will be distributed free among the State officials participating
in the programmes at district level.
The main event of the “Law Week 2012” will be held at the Hulftsdorp
Courts premises on December 1.
About 40 Government and Non Governmental Organizations engaged in the
sphere of laws affecting the day-to-day life of the general public will
be participating in the “Law Week 2012 Exhibition” to be held and a
programme to provide free legal advice will also be conducted on that
day by senior lawyers.
In concurrence with this, on the same day a programme will be
conducted by the Bar Association of Sri Lanka in collaboration with the
Asia Crime Prevention Foundation and Sri Lanka Police to educate the
three-wheeler drivers under the theme of ‘Traffic Laws and Safe Driving’
at the Traffic Courts premises.
Two Model Courts at the Colombo High Court and Magistrate premises to
give practical demonstrations of the court procedures to the civilians
will also be held.
The Association will provide free legal assistance especially to the
remand prisoners who are in custody for more than a year.
A programme will be held to give free legal assistance with regard to
legal problems other than cases pending in courts. Forward such problems
