Japanese envoy donates funds

Japanese Ambassador Nobuhito Hobo donated funds for the Second stage for the development of the living standard of the resettled people in Tellipallai Pradesha area.

The donation took place at a function held at Mathagal Vali Thoondal St. Mary’s Fishermen’s Co-operative Society hall. He also commissioned development work on a nursery school to be built at a cost of Rs. 2.75 million with Japanese aid, a drinking water scheme worth Rs. 9000,000 and work on a welfare centre. Fishing gear and boats were also distributed on the occasion.

Bus employees protest

Point Pedro bus depot employees struck work last Friday protesting against the non-payment of their salaries. They blocked the entrance to the bus depot by halting buses horizontally. They shouted slogans demanding the payment of their salaries.

Kassippu sellers fined

Two persons who had 500 millimeters of Kassipu for sale at Vaddakochy in Kilinochchi have been find Rs. 35,000 by Acting Kilinochchi Magistrate S. Vijeroni. They were further sentenced to two months rigorous imprisonment as they were convicted for same offence earlier.

Murder suspect sentenced

Jaffna High Court Judge J. Visvanathan sentenced Eeeswaran Prakash of Pandaitherippu Thalaiyeddy to 16 years rigorous imprisonment in a case where he was indicted with the murder of an 85 year-old woman and robbing her jewellery valued at 100,000 and Rs. 10,000 in cash. The diseased Poologam Poomany was living alone. He was found guilty to charges of murder and robbery and sentenced to eight-years rigorous imprisonment on each count. The sentences are to be served concurrently.

Chava UC wins

The Chavakachcheri Urban Council won the first prize in the district competition held to select the best council in administration and management for 2011. It was placed second in the provincial contest. The Vavuniya Urban Council won first prize in the provincial contest while the Mannar Urban Council won third prize.

Priest dies in road mishap

Assistant Parish Priest Mullaithivu Rev. Fr. Geethafontgaland Luxman (33) was killed in a motorcycle accident at Maruthankerni Thalayaddy Veethi on the A9 road. He was thrown off the motorcycle he was riding at excessive speed when it stumbled over a mound.

The accident took place in an uninhabited area. He was rushed to Pallai hospital but succumbed . His body has been taken to Jaffna Teaching hospital for Post Mortem examination. He is native of Eluvathivu and was residing at Gurunagar.

Student wins bronze medal at Olympiad

Jude Mithushan Pigirado, a student of St. Xaviers College, Mannar has won a bronze medal at the 9th International Olympiad contest. He represented Sri Lanka at the contest. India, China, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Philippines, Korea, South Africa and Singapore contested at the Olympiad in New Delhi. He is a native of Pallimunnai in Mannar.
