Police ordered to hand over prison inmates’ bodies to kin

Colombo Additional Magistrate Praharsha Ranasinghe yesterday ordered the Police to hand over the four bodies of inmates who died in the shoot out in the Welikada Prison riot, to their families.

The magistrate’s order was sequel to a motion filed by OIC Minor Complaints along with PS Priyantha of Borella Police.

Seven prisoners who escaped by breaking a wall and later apprehended by the Police were also produced before the magistrate.

The magistrate ordered them to be remanded until November 21.

The bodies were identified as that of Liyanage Arachchige Anura of Moratuwa, Sambulagala Susantha de Silva of Weniwelkola, Warnakulasuriya Mudiyanselage Sarath of Galnewa and Mohomed Samsudeen of Akkaraipattu.

The body of the fifth inmate, Oluperuma Arachige Priyantha, remained unclaimed in the police mortuary.
