Ransom case: three remanded

Two men who allegedly threatened and demanded a Rs 2 million ransom from the officer - in - charge of Kobeigane Hospital were remanded until November 23 by the Nikaweratiya magistrate.

Nikaweratiya Police arrested the suspects following a complaint by the officer that the suspects had allegedly threatened him over the phone demanding a Rs 2 million ransom.

The two suspects, residents of Katuwewa and Palugaswewa, were arrested in Kurunegala.


Theft at filling station: two arrested

The Western Province North, Peliyagoda Crime Investigations Branch arrested two suspects in connection with a robbery at a filling station in Peralanda on Sunday.

The two men stole Rs 4,148,714 from the safe of the filling station at gun point on September 3. The Police also took into custody an unregistered lorry the suspects had purchased with the stolen money and two mobile phones.

The suspects aged 25 and 29 are residents of Lunama and Ambalantota. The suspects who were interrogated, divulged details about another three robberies carried out by them in Kegalle, Rambukkana and Mawanella.

They were handed over to Ragama Police for further investigations. The suspects produced before the Negombo magistrate were remanded until November 22.


Hunt for artefacts in kitchen

Three people including a couple were arrested by the Police on Monday while digging the kitchen of their house in Kohombadamana, Medirigiriya in search of artefacts.

They were produced before the Hingurakgoda magistrate. Medirigiriya Police are investigating.


Heroin dealer arrested

Mount Lavinia Police arrested a suspect with 2.110 grammes of heroin and Rs 12,790 in his possession while transporting the heroin in a three wheeler at Mount Lavinia junction.

He was produced in court yesterday.


Hakka patas seized

A suspect was arrested with six hakka patas in his possession at Kariyanukattu, Mulankovil on Monday.

The suspect was produced before the Kilinochchi magistrate.


Teen stabbed

A 15 - year - old boy in Urubokka died after he was stabbed at Miriswatta, Ginnaliya on Monday night.

P I Sampath of Uswatte died in the incident. Urubokka Police are investigating.


Main murder suspect arrested

The Kalutara division crime investigation branch yesterday arrested the main suspect wanted in connection with the murder of a 52 year old man at Panadura in October.

R A Sarachchandra Ranawaka was found dead with slash injuries on his body by Panadura Police on October 16. investigations revealed that the deceased who was domiciled in Italy had faced the mishap while on holiday at his family home.

Panadura Police commenced initial investigations under the directions of Kalutara Division SSP and Kalutara Division Crime Investigation Branch arrested the suspect , a resident of Talpitiya, Wadduwa at around 9.30 am in Panadura yesterday.Further investigations continue.


STF seizes over 50,000 Kgs of refuse tea

STF Intelligent Unit officers on Monday raided a tea depository at a private tea export company in Bemmulla, Kamburugoda and seized over 50,000 Kgs of refuse tea. Four suspects were also arrested. The raid was carried on the directions of the STF ASP ( intelligence ) at around 5.45am on Monday.

A container that was used to load the refuse tea was also seized. Police said if the refuse tea was not detected and seized by the STF,it would have been exported. The suspects, residents of Ragama, Gampola, Alawathugoda and Landewela were handed over to the CID for further investigations. The stock of refuse tea was handed to Sri Lanka Tea Board.


Illegal abattoir raided

Six suspects were arrested with 200 Kg of beef when STF officers attached to the Maskeliya camp raided an illegal abattoir in Halbrook,

Agarapathana on Monday. Other implements used in the illegal act were also seized. The suspects were handed to Agarapathana Police for further investigations.
