Major pipe borne water projects in North

The Water Supply and Drainage Ministry will initiate a pipe borne water scheme that will benefit 51,160 people in the Northern Province.

Work underway on a water tower in the North

This will be carried out under the nine major water supply projects underway in the North. The projects under the theme 'Drinking water for all' (Semata Paaniya Jalaya) will ensure purified drinking water to those badly affected by the scarcity of water in the Northern province.

The projects will cover Jaffna, Mullaithivu, Vavuniya and Mannar, Water Supply and Drainage Minister Dinesh Gunawardana said.

The minister was addressing the progress review meeting in connection with the accelerated water supply projects in the North at the Water Supply and Drainage Ministry, Battaramulla, Pelawatta.

He said under this programme, around 5,860 people will benefit from the Adampan project that will completed at Rs 296 million while another 2,900 people will benefit from the Thewanpeeddi Water Supply Project (estimated cost Rs 168 million).

The Vidathalathiv Water Supply Project will cater to needs of 8,500 people. Rs 204 million will be spent on the project.

Meanwhile, in Vavuniya, 5,000 people will be provided purified water from the Nandukarni project costing Rs 175 million while in Velvetithurai and Marudankerny 11,500 people would benefit.

These two projects will cost Rs 248 million and Rs 25 million, he said.

The Mallavi Water Supply Project will supply water to 4,500 people. The project cost will be Rs 192 million while Pandiyankulama Project (Rs 198 million) will cater to the needs of 2,260 people.

The Oddusudan Project that will be completed at Rs 92 million will supply pure drinking water to 10,700 people.

The Japanese funded Iranamadu Water Supply Project (Rs 260 million) will provide water to rehabilitated settlements.
