Aitken Spence wins Best Corporate Citizens Award

Sri Lanka's private sector at one time that looked at the profit
aspect only is now gradually doing a lot of good work in discharging
their social responsibility. This was an excellent trend for the
sustenance of their business from medium to long term perspective,
Minister of Environment Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said “All of you who
are seated in this grand function today have shown that the private
sector is not only concerned on profits but also about contributing to
the society and also about contributing to the environment while doing
their business in a sustainable way,” Minister Yapa said at the Best
Corporate Citizens Awards for Sustainable Business and CSR 2012.

Aitken Spence was chosen as the Best
Corporate Citizen of Sri Lanka in 2012, by the Ceylon
Chamber of Commerce, which organized the annual event .Here

The event was organized by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce. Sri
Lanka’s Aitken Spence was chosen as the Best Corporate Citizen of Sri
Lanka during the year 2012, by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, the main
event organizer.
He said that the last couple of years saw how unsustainable business
practices of corporate giants had a destructive impact on the world
economies. Therefore it is something that requires a serious look by the
management of companies.
“ This is what we call the Ps approach “People, Planet and Profit”
and all businesses should adopt that to increase the profit margins by
looking after the interest of the society and environment,” Minister
Yapa said.
Ambassador, Head of Delegation of the European Union to Sri Lanka
Bernard Savage said that Sri Lanka has achieved some considerable
economic growth during the past. The beauty of it was that social
responsibility, human rights ethics have integrated into business
activities.
Savage participating as the Guest of Honour at the function said that
Asian countries have shown that economic development has helped
reduction of their poverty. Sri Lanka’s Aitken Spence was chosen as the
Best Corporate Citizen of Sri Lanka in 2012, by the Ceylon Chamber of
Commerce, which organizes the annual event. Consumer durable firm,
Singer Sri Lanka won the second place, while Ceylon Business Limited was
the second runner up of the Best Corporate Citizen Award 2012.
All three, along with other title winners were facilitated at a gala
event, held at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel last evening. National
Development Bank was chosen as the winner in the less than Rs. 15
billion turnover category, while Standard Chartered Bank and People’s
Leasing Company became the first and second runner up in the same
category.
Aitken Spence also bagged two sector awards for, Environment and
Economic Contribution & Governance while the sector award for Social,
People and CSR was won by Singer. The EU SWITCH-Asia Greening Hotels
Awards 2012 was also presented at the event.
Heritance Tea Factory won the award for the Best Green Hotel in
recognition of outstanding commitment to enhance environmental
performance in the Large Hotels and Boutique Hotels category, while
Siddhalepa Ayurveda Health Resort won the Best Green Hotel award in the
SME Hotels category.
