Almost 50 percent of the rural tanks which dried up during the dry
season are now filled up to the brim following recent heavy rains said
Anuradhapura District Irrigation Director Lalith de Alwis.
He said six spill gates of the Eruwewa have been opened by two feet
to drain out excess water. Medawachchiya, Kirindiwatte, Ralapanawa,
Keerikkulama, Mahalinda wewa, Wadigawewa, Wahagahapuwewa and other
medium scale tanks are already near skill level.
He said water level of the large scale tanks have also risen
considerably.
Although water has been released to farmers for Maha cultivations,
they should still use the water sparingly without causing any
unnecessary wastage.
