Rains help increase reservoir water levels

The Irrigation and Water Management Ministry has confirmed that due to present rainy weather, water levels at reservoirs have increased significantly, a Ministry Spokesman said.

The Ministry reports that eventhough water levels in the Mahaweli, Kelani and Walawa reservoirs have increased, the levels are inadequate to supply for cultivation purposes.

Meanwhile, the Irrigation and Water Management Ministry has warned farmers involved in paddy and crop production to take into account the prevailing weather conditions.

The Spokesman further said that despite the rains being experienced in the country, many reservoirs s which have been parched are still to be filled with water sufficient for agricultural purposes.

Further the Ministry has warned that, present water levels in reservoirs are not adequate to commence major cultivations. However, f subsidiary crop cultivations could be commenced under the present situation.
