New LG election system to fulfil people’s wishes - MP Shantha

President Mahinda Rajapaksa decided to introduce the new Local
Government Election system based on a mixture of the First Past the Post
and Proportional Representation Systems in deference to the wishes of
the people. The government hoped to introduced this system which
strengthens minority representation and democratic rights to the
Provincial Council and Parliamentary elections as well in the near
future, said Kurunegala district MP Shantha Bandara.
He was addressing a seminar on Divineguma and the Local Government
election system at the Sabaragamuwa PC Auditorium.
This was part of a series of seminars organised by SLFP General
Secretary Minister Maithripala Sirisena and Treasurer Minister Dullas
Alahapperuma on the instructions of the President to educate various
social strata about the new local election system. Sabaragamuwa Chief
Minister Maheepala Herath presided. |
