Visakha - under 16 rowing champions

At the inaugural Sri Lanka Schools Rowing Championships 2012 held at the Colombo Rowing Club, Beira Lake in Colombo from 13th to 15th in September Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo, newcomers to the game, clinched the Under 16 overall championship with a crew of only seven oarswomen in the team. They emerged as a dominant team in the girl’s category winning three of the four gold medals in the Under 16 category. Overall, Visakha won five medals with four Golds and one Bronze.

The Visakha crew of Samaakhya Gajanayake (Captain), Thisali Siriwardhane (Vice Captain), Piyusha Sumanapala, Samali Agalawatte and Hiruni Abeywardane beat the crews from Ladies, Musaeus and Bishop’s to take the Under 16 Coxed Fours.

In the same age group Thisali Siriwardhane and Samali Agalawatte bagged the gold for the Pairs event.

Samaakhya Gajanayake won the gold medal for Under 16 Single Scull event with Piyusha Sumanapala winning the bronze medal.

Visakha clinched a medal in the senior category as well, with Deshika Herath, bagging the gold for the Under 18 Single Scull event.
