Oman Air Golf Classic at Victoria

This year’s Annual Oman Air Golf Classic 2012 will see around 130
golfers from Sri Lanka and abroad in action at the Victoria Golf and
Country Resort on October 27 and 28.
Oman Air Country Manager for Sri Lanka and Maldives Gihan Karunaratne
said that the Oman Air Golf Classic has grown in stature during this
short period and a very large number of both local and foreign golfers
have shown great interest in participating in this major golfing event
which will draw golfers from the Middle East and other countries and
this year many Germans will participate.
He said that this golfing event will be golf tied with tourism and to
further enhance Sri Lanka’s reputation as a major tourist destination
with peace restored in this Emerald isle over three years ago and the
threat of terrorism has been thrown into the limbo of the past. This
golfing event will give a big boost to tourism.
He said that the Oman Air this will offer four air tickets as prizes
for the destinations operated by them in addition to the trophies and
medals. Oman Air Golf Classic is a celebrated sporting in the country
with a large number of business from the Middle East and Sri Lanka
participating and they on their part are delighted in popularising and
promoting Sri Lanka as a premier golfing destination in the region.
In conclusion he said that the Victoria Golf Course designed by
Donald Steel from the United Kingdom is located in a unique setting on
the edge of the Victoria reservoir overlooked by the famed Knuckles
Range and the Hanguranketha range on the other. This golf course has
been ranked as the Best in Asia and has won the award “Best Course in
the Sub-continent on no loss than on five occasions during the last
decade. It is also ranked among the 100 most golf courses in the world.

Johnston said that Victoria apart from golf has a wide range of
facilities for local and foreign tourists. There is a chain of chalets
and guest houses within the golf complex, horse riding, swimming pool,
well-equipped bar, state-of-the-art Araliya Restaurant, spa, mountain
hiking and many more for those preferring a quiet holiday.
He said that last years championship saw 120 golfers in action and
some of the award were won by foreigners and this year too some close
finishes is expected with some of the locals in fine form as evidence
from the major competitions during the last few months.
