An ailing Europe, austerity and world hunger
The picture on page five in this newspaper on
October 13, showing people thronging a veritable Soup Kitchen in New
Jersey in a frantic effort to secure a square meal, is bound to have
taken many a reader by surprise. They would have least expected the
spectre of hunger to haunt the seemingly wealthiest country of the
West, but the truth is that both hunger and unemployment are proving
to be quite widespread in this once affluent hemisphere.

From rebellion to reintegration and usefulness
Nearly 11,000 ex-LTTErs are reunited with their
families. They live peaceful lives. But our task will not end there.
We have already designed a monitoring system to evaluate their
post-rehabilitation process, to restore their livelihood and explore
employment opportunities for them. The motive is to ensure that they
lead normal lives after the reintegration and also to get their
contribution towards the country’s development.

The 89th birth anniversary of Yogendra
Duraiswamy, the eminent Sri Lankan scholar, well known diplomat and
former ambassador and High Commissioner to Rome, China, Washington
and India and several other parts of the world and subsequently
District Secretary and Government Agent of Jaffna fell on October
14, 2012.
