Mould children with good qualities - Secy to President

Sri Lanka never had a war against a nation. Sri Lanka only had a war against terrorists. If there is a wrong impression on this, specially in foreign countries, it should be corrected, Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga said.

Addressing the launch of Mother Sri Lanka Schools Club Project RUN (Responsible citizenship, Unity, National pride) at Temple Trees yesterday, Secretary Weeratunga said there are no various nationalities in this country.

"Religions, ethnicity, customs and rituals can be changed. But all of them are Sri Lankans," he said.

"A nation without good qualities has no value. We should mould our children with good qualities and discipline. If not, future Sri Lanka will be filled with criminals and useless citizens. In this regard, non governmental organisations like the Mother Sri Lanka Trust is essential to guide our children on the correct path," he said.

Mother Sri Lanka Trust chairperson Janaki Kuruppu said the Mother Sri Lanka Movement's aim is to bring together diverse perspectives under one umbrella to develop positive thinking about Sri Lanka.

Mother Sri Lanka is a non-political non-profit charitable movement with its own independent trust and management consisting of a group of professionals from both public and private sector, who have volunteered.

"Mother Sri Lanka conducts many events in the school sector such as Mother Sri Lanka School Club Programme, our contribution to develop our country, preschool programme, buds of patriotism, etc.

"The Project RUN is a unique concept where children are encouraged to come up with their own project, find the team and appoint leaders as well as find finances for the project under the guidance of the Mother Sri Lanka Trust," she said.

Kuruppu said the project's objectives are to develop a responsible citizen, develop a child who understands and respects other ethnic and religious groups, develop a child who is proud to be Sri Lankan, develop attitudes such as cooperation, respect, interdependence among students as well as teachers, develop entrepreneurship, leadership and project management skills of students and develop students who are self - confident, independent, creative and strategic thinkers who can contribute to nation building.

"The project will be implemented in 1,000 selected schools across the country in collaboration with the Education Ministry," she said.
