'CSD who held guns, now hold mammoties to develop country'

'Civil Security Department (CSD), has earned an income of Rs. 290 million so far from its agricultural, fisheries and brick manufacturing ventures. The CSD members who held firearms in their hands with a view to protecting their villages during the war, were now seen with mammoties and machetes, toiling away to cultivate lands. Accordingly, the paddy cultivation has been extended up to 3,700 acres, covering all CSD forces headquarters throughout the country.

Meanwhile, the CSD members have cultivated maize in 3,500 acres, while other crops have been cultivated in 1,000 acres in CSD farms islandwide. In addition, CSD members have been engaged in another 700 agricultural projects, such as 150 fisheries projects and 350 brick manufacturing projects throughout the the country. The CSD have already spent a sum of Rs.115 million to provide seeds, fertilizer and tractors, which had been required for the agricultural projects. It has also distributed 46 new tractors for these cultivations at a cost of Rs.48.2 million.

These 46 new tractors have been distributed among CSD personnel, by Northern Province Governor Major General G. A. Chandrasiri, on the invitation of CSD Director General, Rear Admiral Ananda Peiris at a ceremony held at the Parliament grounds yesterday. Accordingly, the CSD members attached to force headquarters in Polonnaruwa, Morawewa, Mihintale, Kantale, Mahaoya, Puttalam, Katunayake, Ampara/Moneragala, Uhana, Kataragama, Vavuniya, Welioya, Medawachchiya, Horowpatana, Seruvavila, Galkiriyagama, Pahalalanda/Ampara, Kalpitiya, Wilpattu and Kondachchi, have received tractors for their agricultural projects. "The CSD is transforming itself as a battalion, by shouldering the task of developing Sri Lanka and cultivation ventures in the country," CSD Director General Rear Admiral Ananda Peiris said.

"Earlier, the CSD personnel made maximum contributions to eliminate terrorism and now they were engaged in winning the development war," he said. Caption Northern Province Governor, Major General G.A.Chandarsiri handing over the key of a new tractor to one of the CSD members.
