Boy dies in fire at house
A 10 - year - old boy succumbed to his injuries at the Ragama
Hospital while his parents and sister are receiving treatment, after a
fire broke out while they were sleeping at their home at Tewatte road,
Ragama yesterday around 1am.
Ragama Police doused the fire with the help of residents.
Nurse missing with money
Kurunegala Police commenced a search operation to arrest a woman, a
resident of Jayanthipura, who is missing after taking Rs 1 million from
a person who wanted to buy a land owned by her.
Police said the woman, a nurse by profession, worked at the
Kurunegala General Hospital.
Police commenced investigations following a complaint lodged at the
Special Investigation Bureau by a man from Wariyapola. The complainant
said the woman has gone missing after taking Rs 1 million from him
following a deal to buy a land owned jointly by the woman and her
sister.
The suspect's sister signed the documents. The nurse had gone missing
with the money, the Police said.
Villager dies as trap gun misfires
A man died when he stepped onto a trap gun in a forest in
Medirigiriya on Wednesday.
Nimal Rupasinghe, 27, of Samagipura new town, Medirigiriya faced the
mishap while he was on his way to collect bees honey with another person
in Etambaoya, Ranawarapitiya.
Missing elderly man's body found
The body of a 70 - year - old man, reported missing, was found near a
cemetery in Pothuhera on Wednesday evening. D Gunaratne of Ariyampola
said to be a mentally retarded person, had been reported missing since
Tuesday.
Police said they found the body near West Mandawala cemetery the next
day.
Suspicious death of man
Kotadeniyawa Police are investigating the mysterious death of a 24 -
year - old man at his home in Welihinda on Wednesday.
Investigations revealed that the man was disabled.
Asylum - seekers arrested
Eththukala Police arrested 10 persons for attempting to illegally
migrate to Australia from the Negombo beach on Wednesday.
The group included six asylum - seekers who are residents of Jaffna
and four persons, residents of Manippai, Chawakachcheri and Negombo.
Thieves nabbed
Gampaha Police arrested four suspects, including a woman, in
connection with nine cases of breaking into houses on Tuesday.
Part of the stolen loot were found in the suspects' possession.
Police said the main suspect, a resident of Nilammahara, Buthpitiya,
had hidden the stolen goods in a place in Borella with the other three
suspects.
Jewellery, a lap top computer and a digital camera were among the
seized goods.
Gampaha magistrate remanded the suspects until September 17.
Arrested with duplicate of Daruwane
A communication owner with duplicate DVD copies of the Sinhala film
Daruwane being screened islandwide was arrested by Avissawella Police on
Wednesday. The police made the arrest following a complaint to the
Avissawella CID branch by the director of the film on Wednesday that the
suspect who runs a communication centre at Gurugalla, Avissawella had
copies of the film. The police also seized CDs that contained
pornographic videos and a computer.
Fake note lands driver behind bars
A driver who produced fraudulent notes in the denomination of Rs 500
at the Southern Highway entrance was arrested at the Pinnaduwa
checkpoint on Wednesday afternoon.
The suspect, an electrical engineer at the Ceylon Electricity Board,
was handed over to Akmeemana Police.
Six fined for attempting to sell Buddha statue
Six persons arrested for attempting to sell a 300 - year - old Buddha
statue for Rs 4 million, were fined a total of Rs 1,260,000 by
Thambuttegama magistrate Chamara Kekirideniya yesterday. The suspects
separated the 200 kg statue in to six pieces after stealing it from Sri
Swarnabimbaramaya, Eerattikulama in Nochchiyagama.
