Teen dies in wild jumbo attack

One student died and another injured when they were attacked by a
wild elephant while retuning home after a bath. S P C Nuwan was admitted
to Dambulla Base Hospital with severe injuries.
The dead boy was identified as U Uadara, 17.
Police driver recruitment underway
The Police will recruit 2,124 police drivers.
Those between 19 and 32 years with six passes in the GCE Ordinary
Level examination in not more than two sittings, are eligible to apply ,
the Police Public Relations Unit said yesterday.
Yoga workshop
A free yoga meditation workshop conducted by the Maharagama Sethsada
Yoga Nikethanaya will be held on September 29 from 9 am at the
Maharagama Youth Centre, said the Nikethanaya’s Director Chamin
Warnakula.
Dr. Gopal Itikar, an Indian Yoga Consultant will join him in
conducting the workshop, said Warnakula who has a Diploma in yoga,
hypnotism, counselling and physiology. He said nearly 1,500 persons are
expected to attend the workshop and they will be provided with
breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. Those wishing to participate should

Off to UK for PHD
Twenty five year old Yawwani Poornima Gunawardana of 150/47, Yowun
Mawatha, Bellanwila started her education at Musaeus College, Colombo 7
and completed her tertiary education at Colombo University School of
Computing. She topped her batch for four consecutive years reading for
the Bsc Special Degree programme and passed with First Class honours in
2011, obtaining the Prof. Mohan Munasinghe Award(Gold Medal) for
Computer Science.
She has been granted a Research Studentship Award in recognition of
her excellent achievements from the University of Southampton in the
United Kingdom.
Public talk
Ven. Ayagama Suseela Thera will deliver a public talk in English on
'The importance of Seela in treading the path' at the meeting of the
Servants of the Buddha Society on September 29 at 4.30 pm at the
Maithree Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya.
Sir John Kotelawela commemoration ceremony
The 32nd death anniversary commemoration ceremony of General Sir John
Kotelawela will be held at the Kotelawela Defence University, Ratmalana
on September 30 with the laying of a wreath by Chief Guest Gen. JED
Perera at 10 am.
Uroos Mubarak
The annual Uroos Mubarak in memory of His Holiness Hazrath Kuthubus
Sailan Seyyedina Ash Shaikh Usman Ibnu Abdur Rahman Siddiquee Waliyullah
(Q.S.A.) will commence on September 26 with the hoisting of the flag at
5 pm. Recitals in honour of the saints will take place daily after
Maghrib prayers and the final Thamam will take place on October 6 from 5
pm onwards.
Deyata Jawaya exhibition
The Deyata Jawaya industrial and trade exhibition will be held from
September 26 to 29 at the Anura Central College, Yakkala.
The four-day exhibition has been organized with the prime objective
of uplifting the economic, educational and social standards of the rural
community and the four days are named under four themes, indigenous
medicine, agriculture and industry, media and War Heroes, arts and
literature.
There will be competitions and educational programmes on each day
related to the themes for selected school children from 50 schools in
the Gampaha District.
The exhibition has been organized under the advise of Indigenous
Medicine Minister Pandu Bandaranayake. The Associated Newspapers of
Ceylon Limited (ANCL) is the print media sponsor for the event. Economic
Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa will be the chief guest at today's
opening ceremony which will commence at 5 pm.
Book launch
The SAARC Cultural Centre launched two books; Contemporary Short
Stories of the SAARC Region 2011, the annual anthology of short stories
of the SAARC region and poems from the SAARC region, 2011 published by
the SAARC Cultural Centre, Colombo jointly with Vijitha Yapa
Publications on September 25 at the Middle Stage (in front of the
Sirimavo Bandaranaike Exhibition Centre).
Dharmapala Walk
The 'Palians Walk for the Future' organised to commemorate the 72nd
anniversary celebration of Dharmapala Vidyalaya, Pannipitiya will
commence on September 30 at 8.30 am from the Nawinna Grounds(Opposite
Arpico Showrooms) and will proceed to the college grounds.
All proceeds from the walk will be utilised for infrastructure
development activities in the school.
