Korean help for Lanka's cuttle fish industry

Members of a leading Korean company visited Sri Lanka to explore ways of supporting the island's cuttle fish industry.

D J International Chief Executive Officer Shin Soo Yong and officials had talks with Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister Dr Rajitha Senaratne in this regard.

Shin visited Puttalam and Kalpitiya with National Aquatic Resources Agency officials and explored how the Korean government could assist Sri Lanka in the cuttle fish industry.

"It is believed that squid, cuttle fish and octopus resources of the country are under utilised due to the lack of appropriate fishing technologies. We hope to obtain technical assistance from Korea in this regard," the minister said.

The Korean trade delegation are also looking to become fisheries partners with Sri Lanka.

This is following discussions Minister Senaratne had with Korean officials during his recent visit to Korea to participate in the Yeosu EXPO 2012.
