Two weeks of drunk driver toll 2,048

Police arrested 2,048 motorists driving under the influence of liquor from September 11 to Monday.

Of them, 15 were passenger bus drivers, 1,796 trishaw drivers and motorcyclists.

A total of 23,521 drivers who had driven under the influence of liquor from January to Monday were also arrested, the Police said. Of this, the licences of 11, 085 drunk drivers were suspended temporarily while 45 driving licences were cancelled.

The highest number of drunk drivers were arrested from Nugegoda. The number was 1, 999.

Another 1,601 drivers were arrested from Kandy, 1, 217 from Gampaha, 1, 079 from Kuliyapitiya and 1,033 from Mount Lavinia.

Meanwhile, over 25,000 accidents were reported from January to September, the Police said.
