‘Former war-affected areas on rapid development track’

President Mahinda Rajapksa said the people of the North and East receive every facility, which is enjoyed by people in other areas.

The President was addressing the people of the Vellamullivaikkal area at the 681, Brigade Headquarters yesterday, taking part in an event organized to mark the conclusion of the resettlement process of people displaced by LTTE terrorism.

The President said the government is providing everything to the people in the war-affected areas since the development of these areas was badly affected by terrorism. But the government placed these war hit areas on a rapid development track allocating billions of rupees in funds.

‘The President added that it is a remarkable achievement that the resettlement process could be completed within a short period. No other country in the world could boast of such an achievement. A few people, who do not have proper housing facilities will be provided new houses in the near future.

‘The Security Forces personnel and government officials are jointly engaged in the process of constructing houses.

“The people in the North and East was placed under immense hardships due to terrorism. Not only development, but, also the other fields, such as, health facilities, social needs, education etc were at a standstill for decades?,” the President said.

“Now, a new era has dawned, where everyone is treated with equality. Accordingly, these areas in line with the other parts of the country are developing rapidly. Under these rapid development activities, every sector is booming. Farmers, fishermen, technicians, students, state officials, private sector officials etc are enjoying the dividends.

President Rajapaksa noted that there is no geographical discrimination and every part of the country receives equal benefits.

He further added that some narrow sighted elements were trying to obtain advantage whipping up minor issues in these areas.

“But I know that you are wise enough not to fall prey to such machinations, “the President said.

The President asked these elements to assist the people in these areas without leveling fabricated charges.
