Worthy pursuit to strengthen the needy

Youth is the livewire of the development of a community. The contribution they can make towards the community development is numerable. International Movement for Community Development (IMCD) is a collaboration of such selfless youth who pursuits to make the society a better place to live.

IMCD is a non-political, independent, not-for-profit organization driven by energetic youth of Sri Lanka. Its members strive in rural development, environmental preservation, bridging regional disparity, enhancing the skills of the community and alleviating poverty in Sri Lanka. Evolving around the phenomenon of ‘From the society… To the society… With the society…’ IMCD endeavours in strengthening the hands of the people who are in need.

Passionate with the vision of becoming ‘the global role model for community centred social development’, IMCD has demonstrated clear prospects of becoming an exemplary social service organization in Sri Lanka.

Identifying the pulse of the nation, IMCD initiates community development projects to strengthen the society. Needy Readers is yet another timely initiative of IMCD to enhance the educational system, with the broader spectrum of improving the living standards and alleviating poverty in Sri Lanka.

The initiative is a prolonged attempt which will be implemented on an annual basis with an increased number of beneficiaries.

Meticulously selected underprivileged schools in rural and urban areas will be equipped with library facilities and other essential stationaries will be provided to assist their studies.

Thunnana-Siri Sumanajothi Maha Vidyalaya, Nivithigala-Colambagama Maha Vidyalaya, Rajagiriya-Siri Hada Vidyalaya and Dale-Tamil Vidyalaya are amongst the beneficiaries of the Needy Readers Project in 2012.

The Magazine Prison and a Cultural Centre at Ratnapura also will be benefited from this initiative, where stationery will be provided to fulfil their prevailing necessities.

New books, as well as used books in good condition and all in kind materials are being collected to be disseminated to the selected schools.

All generous books and in kind donations are highly valued, as it helps to light the future of these innocent kids. At present centralised book collection is undertaken, with few key locations at Nawinna, Borella and Rajagiriya. But with the progressive escalation in book donations, the collection centres will be set up to encompass major cities in Sri Lanka.

The books and stationery items will be distributed commemorating the World Children’s Day on October 1st.

The enthusiasm and active partaking of the youth in this initiative is noteworthy and it is a clear indication of the change the youth can embellish in the society with the precise guidance and advices. Further IMCD would like to invite all interested parties to join hands with them, to strengthen their endeavours.

IMCD invites the public to take hand in hand with them to give a hope to the people who are in need. The official address of the IMCD office is “No:15, Maya Mawatha, Nawinna”.
