Joes through to final
St. Joseph's College earned their spot in the final of the Zahira
Super 16 Soccer tournament along with Wesley College. The final
encounter will take place on September 12 at 4.00 pm at Zahira College
Grounds.
St. Joseph's College 1st XI Soccer Team was drawn up against De
Mazenod College as their first match. De Mazenod College was a strong
side from Kandana who held the reputation for being the former A
Division champions. These two teams met each other in a pre-season
friendly earlier this year, which was drawn 2-2. The match was played on
September 2.
The quarter final match was played on the following Monday and the
Josephians had to come across tough challenge against Lumbini College.
The Joes forward, Hansa Kalhara became their savior yet again along with
another goal under his belt. The only goal of the match was scored soon
after the second half began and was more than enough for the lads in
blue and white to advance to the semi-finals.
The Semi-final fixtures featuring Joes was drawn against St.
Benedict's College, Kotahena. The match took place on last Monday amidst
a considerable crowd. Again the first half saw no goal from either side.
But the second half of the game witnessed a nail biting 45 minutes of
football. Hansa became the hero once again when he netted the 1st goal
of the game to put Joes up in front.
Then the Josephian Captain registered another goal from a well-taken
free kick. Benedictines responded a few moments later from a penalty.
But however much they tried to equalize, time didn't allow it. It was
already proved that it was a promising evening for the Josephians when
the full time whistle was blown. The final score stood 2-1 with victory
to boys from Colombo 10.
