Knife attack on Bank manageress
A man who attempted to stab the manageress of Inginiyagala Rural Bank
to rob the bank was caught by another person in the bank and handed over
to police on Tuesday.
The incident occurred when the suspect who arrived at the bank on a
motorcycle wearing a helmet and a jacket entered the bank and grabbed
the manager and attempted to stab her.
Another person in the bank caught the suspect.
Police found a plastic grenade and a kris knife in his possession.
Inginiyagala Police are investigating.
Chain snatch thief arrested
A suspect who stole a gold chain worth Rs 125,000 was arrested by
Pothuhera police on Tuesday.
The suspect had snatched the chain at a house in Deniyawatte on
August 22.
The police found the stolen chain in his possession.
Pothuhera Police are investigating.
Body found near railway crossing
Ratgama Police found the body of a man with broken legs near an
unprotected railway crossing at Wellabada on Monday. Police identified
the deceased as Anil Sirinatha, 29, of Tsunami Complex, Boossa.
Police suspect the victim had been knocked down by a train the
previous night.
The body was handed over to his family after the post- mortem.
Ratgama Police are investigating.
Man shot dead
A 31 - year - old man was shot dead by a group of unidentified gunmen
at Kuruthalawa, Ragama on Tuesday. K P K W Gunawardena of Ragama died in
the incident.A group of gunmen who arrived at his home fled the scene
after shooting him. Ragama Police are investigating.
Death of woman : three held
Vavuniya Police arrested three suspects in connection with a death of
a woman in Marakkarampalei which occurred in January 2008 following a
complaint lodged on Monday.
The deceased's husband is among the suspects. Investigations revealed
S Rajeswari, 40, of Oyasinnakulam had been clubbed and pushed into a
well.
The suspects had later burnt her body.
Vavuniya Police are investigating.
Fisherman dies
A fisherman died in a fishing trawler in the sea on Monday.
Tangalle Police are investigating following a complaint lodged by the
owner of the fishing trawler which stated thatM Shantha Rohana, 50,
reportedly died while fishing in the sea.
Vessels which left Kudawella fishing harbour with six fishermen on
August 19 had taken three days to reach the shores, police said.
Suspect nabbed with heroin
Boralesgamuwa Police arrested a suspect with 35 grammes of heroin ear
Galwala Playground , Katuwawala on Tuesday. The suspect, a resident of
Attidiya Road, Kawdana was produced before the Gangodawila magistrate
yesterday.
Body found
Mahiyanganaya Police found parts of a body burnt in a brick furnace
in a land in Wadakaha Arawa , Ridimaliyadde on Tuesday.
Investigations revealed it was the body of 26- year- old O H
Premaratne who lived at the same address.
Police arrested the deceased's wife in connection with the incident.
Mahiyangana Police are investigating.
Woman dies in jumbo attack
A woman died after being attacked by an elephant in Pahayarwatte,
Henkal Grama in Samanthurai on Tuesday.
M S Muttulankumma, 65, died in the incident.
Suspects with cannabis arrested
The SF HQ South 14th Division and 12th Division arrested two suspects
with 20.78 gms of cannabis and 320 milligrammes of heroin in Grandpass
and Maligawatte on Tuesday.
They were handed over to the respective police stations for further
investigations.
Saved from drowning
STF officers attached to the Arugambay Camp rescued three people who
got into difficulties while bathing at the Ulla beach in Pothuvil on
Tuesday. They were handed over to their guardians after rendering first
aid.
Arrested transporting cattle
Acting on a tip-off STF officers of the Kanuwa camp on patrol,
arrested two suspects while they were transporting cattle in a lorry
illegally in Pothuvil on Tuesday. The suspects were handed over to the
Pothuvil police for further investigations.
On the same day the Special Weapons and Tactics team of STF
headquarters raided a house in Gonawala and arrested a suspect with 887
illegally imported cigarettes in his possession. The suspect was handed
over to the Sapugaskanda police.
Gas cylinder explodes
A soldier was hospitalized after an LP Gas cylinder exploded on
Tuesday in Paranthan. The soldier attached to SF HQ, Kilinochchi 65th
Division was admitted to the Kilinochchi general hospital. Meanwhile two
soldiers attached to SF HQ South 12 th Division were admitted to the
Matara hospital after a tree collapsed on them in Nadugala on the same
