Wellawatte triple murder: suspect confesses to poisoning victims

The main suspect in the Wellawatta Ramakrishna Road triple murder
confessed to the Police he gave poisoned youghurt to his parents and
sister to obtain money and jewellery that his parents owned, after his
father rejected his request for Rs 300,000 which he wanted to pay back
his loans.
The suspect, Prabath Kumaraswamy, 28, fled the scene after poisoning
his parents and sister. Police arrested him in Kadawatha while traveling
in a private bus plying from Colombo to Kurunegala.
A tip - off from a passenger in the same bus led to the arrest. The
passenger had seen the suspect's photograph in a newspaper.
A portion of the poison used to kill the victims and their identity
cards were also seized. The suspect was handed over to the Colombo Crime
Division for further investigations. The suspect confessed he killed his
parents and sister after his father refused to give him part of his
(father's) retirement allowance. He said his intention was to obtain
money and jewellery since he was in debt to people he had borrowed money
from.
The suspect had visited their home in Kotagala after the incident and
searched for money. |
