Rains in catchment areas

A number of catchment areas including Laxapana, Norton, Canyon, Castlereagh, Mousakelle and Samanala Wewa received a notable amount of rainfall on Saturday, Meteorology Department sources said yesterday.

Reports said Laxapana received 65.6 mm of rain, Norton 60.0 mm, Canyon 23.9 mm, Castlereagh 19.1 mm, Mousakelle 21.5 mm and Samanala Wewa 15.1 mm of rainfall on Saturday. The sources said showers can be expected at several places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa Provinces and in the Galle, Matara and Kurunegala districts. "Thundershowers will develop at a few places in the North-central, Eastern, Uva and Central Provinces during the afternoon or evening.

Accordingly, Anuradhapura, Batticaloa, Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya and Trincomalee will receive thunder showers during the evening," the sources said. Colombo, Galle and Ratnapura districts will receive a few spells of shower while winds of up to 60 km/hr can be expected during showers or thunder showers. .

The maximum temperature reported was 37.2 Celsius from Trincomalee and minimum temperature of 14.0 Celsius was from Nuwara-Eliya.
